Cultural Safety Training Program
program Objectives
Sawano Pinesiwan believes in the value of working with and creating partnerships with non-Indigenous people and their communities as they strive to find ways to improve the relationship with the Indigenous clients or employees. We will focus on the specific needs of an organization to ensure the information shared is culturally appropriate, sensitive and factual.
curriculum
In this program we will discuss stereotypes, address misconceptions and promote awareness, understanding and acceptance of Indigenous culture and people.
We will present the history of how Colonization and the Residential School System has impacted and influenced the behavior of Indigenous people, past and present. We will review myths and stereotypes which can negatively influence how Indigenous people are treated and perceived.
The objective is to bring awareness to the impact that these myths and stereotypes have for people who work in the Indigenous field and to take the opportunity to explore healthy ways in which we can be respectful and helpful in our relationships with the Indigenous People
We utilize an experiential interactive principle of adult learning, validating and drawing on the strengths and abilities of the participants to encourage interaction in the training sessions. This may mean working in small and large groups. Our goal is to create a safe and respectful environment. We believe that every aspect of its clients’ service work needs to be focused on identifying the best solution and practices: going beyond “acceptable” to achieve the very best.
